How to Convert a PDF to Word (Editable Text)

Sometimes you need to actually edit the wording of a document that only exists as a PDF — a resume someone sent you as a PDF, an old report you need to update, a contract template. Converting it to Word gets you editable text again. Here's what that process can and can't do.

How to convert it

1. Open a converter such as PDFly's PDF to Word.
2. Upload the PDF.
3. Click Convert, then download the .docx file.
4. Open it in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice — it's a standard, fully editable document.

What actually transfers over

A conversion like this extracts the text and pictures from the PDF and rebuilds them as Word paragraphs and images, roughly in the order they appear on the page, with page breaks kept in place. For a fairly simple document — a letter, a report, a resume without fancy columns — that gets you a genuinely editable result close to the original.

What doesn't transfer perfectly

Be realistic about a few things:

• Exact layout. Multi-column text, text wrapped tightly around an image, or precise pixel positioning won't reproduce exactly — the content comes through, but reflowed into a normal top-to-bottom document.
• Tables. A visual table in the PDF (drawn with lines, not an actual data table) usually converts as separate lines of text rather than a proper Word table.
• Fonts. The specific fonts used in the PDF generally aren't preserved — you'll get a standard document font instead.

This isn't unique to free tools — even paid, well-known PDF converters struggle with pixel-perfect layout reconstruction, because a PDF simply doesn't store "paragraphs" and "columns" the way Word does; it stores where each piece of text sits on the page. Any converter has to make a best guess at reconstructing structure from that.

When this is the right tool

It's the right call when you need to edit the words — fix a typo, update a date, rewrite a paragraph — in a document that started life as text (typed, not scanned). It's the wrong call if you need an exact visual replica of a heavily designed flyer or a scanned image of a page; for the latter, editing the PDF directly (or just treating the scan as an image) tends to work better than converting it.

What if the PDF is a scanned image, not real text?

If the PDF was created by scanning a paper document, there's no underlying text to extract at all — just a picture of a page. Converting that to Word without OCR (optical character recognition) will produce an empty or near-empty document. That's a different problem from what a straightforward text-extraction converter solves.
