How to Merge PDF Files for Free (No Software Needed)

If you've got a handful of PDFs — scanned receipts, a contract and its signature page, a few chapters of a report — and you need them as one file, you don't need to install anything. Here's the fastest way to do it, and a couple of things worth knowing before you do.

The quickest way: merge them in your browser

1. Open a free merge tool like PDFly's Merge PDFs.
2. Drag in all the files you want to combine — PDFs and even images (PNG, JPEG) work, and each image becomes its own page.
3. Drag the file cards into the order you want them to appear in the final document.
4. Click Merge, and download the combined PDF.

Because this runs entirely in your browser, the files never get uploaded to a server. That matters if any of them contain anything sensitive — contracts, IDs, financial statements — since there's nothing to leak in the first place.

What if the files are out of order or upside down?

Most merge tools, including this one, let you reorder files before combining them by dragging their cards. If a specific page inside one of the PDFs is rotated the wrong way, though, you'll usually need to fix that afterward with a PDF editor rather than during the merge step itself — a PDF editor with page rotation is the more direct route for that.

Do I need to worry about file size?

Can I merge a PDF with a Word document or a photo?

You can't merge a raw .docx file directly — it needs to be a PDF first. Photos and simple images (PNG, JPEG, GIF, WEBP), on the other hand, usually merge in directly, since the tool just treats each one as a single-page PDF behind the scenes.

A note on order and naming

Before merging, it's worth renaming your files with a number prefix (01-cover.pdf, 02-report.pdf, and so on) if you're going to be doing this often — most tools default to alphabetical order when you first add files, and fixing the order by dragging one-by-one gets tedious past four or five files.
